Uncover the Truth about Eggs Cholesterol

I don’t know about you, but for me, I love eggs. Am I in danger of developing a heart disease? Probably yes, but not necessarily that I will have high cholesterol or heart Eggs Cholesteroldisease. Why so? It is because: studies have shown that eating eggs is not the ultimate culprit for having heart disease. It is eating foods with saturated and trans-fats that can cause heart disease and other cholesterol related diseases.

Do You Know What Cholesterol Is?

Before you feel guilty, and avoid eating those delicious egg benedicts, fries, burgers and bacon because of its cholesterol content; know first what cholesterol is.

Cholesterol is a waxy substance found in some foods that are produced by the liver. Cholesterol is essential in the production of vitamin D and several hormones in your body, creates bile salt that aids in digesting fat, and create cell walls. Whether you know it or not, your liver is producing about one thousand milligrams of cholesterol per day that is enough to support your body requirement.

What about Eggs Cholesterol?

Research and studies proved that eggs, particularly from chicken, have high cholesterol content. Therefore, if your diet is high in eggs cholesterol, you most likely will have high blood cholesterol. But, the level of cholesterol in your diet may increase your blood cholesterol in a different amount from other people. So, it is a case to case basis.

Each egg contains two hundred thirteen milligrams of cholesterol, which are all found in the yolk. Egg whites do not contain any cholesterol. If you are healthy, you are allowed to take about three hundred milligrams of cholesterol per day. If you are suffering from cardiovascular disease, high LDL or bad blood cholesterol level, or diabetes; you are limited to take less than two hundred milligrams of cholesterol per day.

Although eggs contain a high level of cholesterol, we must also take into consideration that eggs are also good source of food nutrients and not just focus on eggs cholesterol. Actually, eggs contain six grams of protein and several unsaturated fats. It is also a good contributor of choline that enhances memory and zeaxanthin and lutein that protect you from having vision loss.

It should also be noted that not all cholesterol that you eat goes straight to your bloodstream. For most people, just a very small amount of cholesterol from the food they eat passes into their blood. Remember, it is trans and saturated fats that are bad and have adverse effects on your blood cholesterol level.

What to Do If You Want Eggs But Not Cholesterol?

Like me who likes eggs, you can still eat an egg a day and be okay. But, if you do eat an egg daily, you have to cut back your intake of saturated and trans fats.

You can also enjoy eating eggs and food with eggs by not eating the yolk. If you already have a problem with your cholesterol level and still want eggs, use yolk-free egg substitutes or pourable egg whites in your diet or cooking and baking. You can also use two egg whites to replace an egg to reduce cholesterol in your recipes that call for eggs.
